RUN (2020) Movie Review

"I know that I scare you and I know that I’ve hurt you. But I promise I will spend every minute of our lives making sure you never feel that way again." - Diane

This psychological thriller panted up the tracks to be one of the best movies of 2020 when Hulu first released its teaser trailer last month. I looked forward to seeing it and it didn't let me down. I was particularly moved when I saw the cast including new-comer, Kiera Allen, who plays the wheelchair-ED Chloe and who is actually disabled in real life. Kiera put up a performance of a lifetime and held her own against a veteran in person of Sarah Paulson as this is literally her first feature film debut. Her suffering as Chloe in RUN is relatable and it will keep you tensed on the edge of your seat, wishing you could help her get away.

The movie is about a home-schooled teenager who begins to suspect her mother is keeping a dark secret from her. Chloe, (Kiera Allen) is an intelligent teenager with throes of physical disabilities and in spite of all these challenges, she intermittently pushes to leave her small town life for college but before she could run to the trove where the gems of her dreams are, she would have to escape her manipulative mother whose dark secrets run deeper than Chloe's fears. Seeing her struggle all the time to get away from her mother was a little painful to watch.

The story felt a little bit cliché to me and it seemed predictable but the film found a way to combat this by keeping you guessing.
Sarah Paulson as Diane Sherman was exceptionally good even though she was very dark, creepy and frightening in some scenes (especially when she's about to rage) which complements the title right? Run!

Run stars Sarah Paulson and Kiera Allen as Diane Sherman and Chloe Sherman respectively. The Aneesh Chaganty thriller horror was released on digital on November 20, 2020 by streaming network, HULU.

My rating: 8/10

AMAZING TOP 10 FANTASY MOVIES YOU PROBABLY UNDERRATED.

"I'm an adventurer, looking for treasure" ― Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist
These are some the Fantasy movies you might have missed. Never seen them? I've got some good and bad news. Bad News: You missed a treasure; Good News: It's not too late, here they are. These movies may thrill you, make you laugh, make you cry or provoke you.

1. THE SHAPE OF WATER (2017)
Filmmaker - Guillermo Del Toro, who is prolifically known to play in the fantasy genre while always adding his own spice to the genre in 2017,  decided to make his boldest film and best ever film. The Shape Of Water tells the story of a mute janitor working in a government facility who develops a symbiotic relationship with a strange aquatic creature that is being confined. The well-acted and visually compelling movie was a hit and went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director. I absolutely recommend.

2. PAN'S LABYRINTH (2006)
This Spanish feature movie was also made by Guillermo Del Toro (put a respect on that name). It tells a fairy tale about a Princess whose father is the king of the underworld who eventually visits the human world where the sunlight blinds her and erases her memory. She becomes mortal and eventually dies. The king believes that eventually, her spirit will return to the underworld, so he builds labyrinths, which acts as portals, around the world in preparation for her return. Pan's Labyrinth was appraised for its direction, cinematography, and superb acting. It won three Oscars for best Cinematographer, Best Direction, and best make-up. Find your way in this labyrinth of thrills. I recommend.

3. BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA (2007)
This wonderful film is about a friendless boy, who is having trouble everywhere in life, gets bullied a lot but is inspired and changed by the new girl at school, who teaches him the importance of fun and imagination. Bridge to Terabithia was released to international acclaim. The dynamic visuals and natural performances from the cast further enhanced the imaginative film. Bridge to Terabithia was nominated for seven awards and won five of them. You should totally see this lovely movie. P.S: An handkerchief might come in handy.

4. WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE (2009)
The film centers on a lonely boy named Max who sails away to an island inhabited by creatures known as the Wild Things, who declare Max their king. This visually stunning movie will make you feel thrilled and satisfied. A film for anyone who's savored the joys of childhood. It will make your inner child run wild. Feel the nostalgia as it takes you to Where The Wild Things Are...

5. A MONSTER CALLS (2016)
This Patrick Ness written film is about a 12-year-old boy named  Conor dealing with his mother’s terminal illness; taken care of by an unsympathetic grandmother, he is further embroiled in a world of bullies. Conor finds a most unlikely ally when a Monster appears at his bedroom window. Ancient, wild, and relentless, the Monster guides Conor on a journey of courage, faith, and integrity. Deemed by many as film of the year, this movie will do you more good than harm.

6. LIFE OF PI (2012)
Life of Pi is an odyssey that has everything: love, danger, spectacular locations, swimming with tigers, and the three major world religions. It is a staggering mataphor for life. This is my favorite Ang Lee movie. It won four awards at the Oscars. It is a story of a young man who survives a disaster at sea and who is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. He (Pi) eventually forms a pact with an unlikely co-voyager: a Bengal Tiger. Visual stunning, well directed and thought provoking, try this.

7. ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE (2014)
Only Lovers Left Alive is a film you watch not majorly for the plot, but for its atmosphere. Its photography is immensely rich, all the movie is shot at night, no single shot in the day, everything is so dark and calm. The soundtrack is unique. It is a vampire movie, yes, the characters are very pale, old and romantic. It is most wickedly smart and rich. Tom Hiddleston is Adam, Tilda Swinton is Eve. It does not focus on blood and gore, neither is it a thriller nor a horror. Looking for fun? Here's your best stop.

8. SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD (2010)
Are you a fan of Michael Cera? Do you love teenage movies with lots of sexy ladies in it? Do you have a knack for comedy? Say no more! This movie will make you laugh your ribs off by the time you're done with it. It is a very fun film with loads of story lines, adventure and fantasy. It's about a young man who must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes one by one in order to win her heart. Lol. I recommend.

9. STARDUST (2007)
This is an adventure/fantasy film that takes place in a countryside town bordering on a magical land where a young man must fulfill his promise to his beloved that he'll retrieve a fallen star by venturing into the magical realm. It contains a stellar cast, it isn't cheesy or cliché, the score is perfect and the plot is classy. It has won numerous awards. I totally recommend.

10. PETE'S DRAGON (2016)
This is a beautiful story about the adventures of an orphaned boy named Pete and his friend (Elliott) who is also a dragon. This movie looks great visually, the splendid scenery being especially good complemented beautifully by cinematography that's atmospheric and picturesque. I'd definitely try it if I were you.

New WONDER WOMAN: 1984 announcement! Oh wait... There's a new trailer too.

Wonder Woman:1984 female director, Patty Jenkins has released an online statement on Twitter that the film will now be released by December 16, 2020 after some frustrating intermittent postponements as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
This was followed by the release of a brand new trailer to complement the announcement.
Watch the trailer below...
The plot of the second installment of the DCCU movie, after a successful global campaign at the box-office in 2017, will date back to 1984, during the Cold War, when our classical heroine, Diana Prince comes into conflict with two formidable foes - media businessman, Maxwell Lord and friend-turned-enemy (a villainess who possesses superhuman strength and agility), Barbara Ann Minerva while re-uniting with her love interest, Steve Trevor.
Wonder Woman:1984 major cast and details include: Gal Gadot as Diana Prince (Wonder Woman), an immortal demi-goddess, Amazon  princess and warrior. Diana is the daughter of Hippolyta, the Amazonian queen of Themyscira, and Zeus, the king of the Olympian Gods. Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord: A charismatic businessman and entrepreneur who is famous for TV infomercials (There's more than meets the eye; he is presumed to also have some sort of brain power). Kristen Wiig also starrs as Barbara Ann Minerva (Cheetah), an archaeologist who befriends Diana before becoming imbued with a cheetah-theme appearance and abilities leading her into a conflict against Diana and teaming up with Lord. And then we have 'sweet' Trevor (Chris Pine) who is an American pilot and spy and the love interest of Diana who presumably died in an airplane crash in the first movie. One way or the other, he's back. How? We'll definitely find out this Christmas.
Wonder Woman 1984 is scheduled to be simultaneously released theatrically by Warner Bros. Pictures and digitally on HBO Max in North America on December 25, 2020.
The film will debut theatrically in international markets that do not have HBO Max on December 16, 2020.
SEE YOU IN '84!

DREAMLAND (2020): REVIEW

Now, let's talk about westerns... (10 years later...) still not finished. Arggh... There's no way in hell you'd talk about Hollywood without mentioning the western genre; failure to do so should be one of a million ways to die in the west (pun intended). Talk about the gore, violence, the iconic boots, Cowboys, hats, the sunscape, the landscape, the good ol' accent, etc. I would relish the thought of going back in time to live it but spare me the violence (Thanks, I'm good).
This a review of Dreamland: This western film is directed by young director, Miles Joris-Peyrafitte. The screenplay/script is written by Nicolas Zwart. Never heard of them before? Yeah. That's because they are not popular and that could make you feel you'd be wasting your time watching this movie but it'd be a miss if you did that.
Dreamland is about a teen bounty hunter (Finn Cole) who is torn between helping or capturing a seductive fugitive bank robber (Margot Robbie) hiding in his small town during The Great Depression (The Great Depression according to history was a worldwide economic depression that lasted for 10 years). The seventeen year old Eugene has had a rough childhood, an absentee father and a avery uptight strict stepfather who was wonderfully portrayed by Travis Fimmel. Eugene dreams of helping his family in the midst of the holocaust-IC economy but one wonders how he was going to achieve this when he spends more time straying around and engrossing himself in fictional magazines. Luck however came his way when he sees a reward in a magazine for a bank robber in Margot Robbie's Allison Wells. I eventually smiled to myself when Eugene's 'luck' brought a wounded Allison Wells into his family's barn (somebody shout "PLOT!"). It turned out that this encounter gave us a beautiful,  dusty and violent ride of a romantic 'couple on the run'; makes me remember Moonrise Kingdom (2012). The fun about the movie is that we get to see Eugene live his fantasies and how he processes these events is all laid out for you to see in this movie.
The acting was spot-on and impeccable; thanks to Margot Robbie's Allison Wells who brought her A-game to the film. "You can take the girl out of the class but you simply can't take the class out of the girl". It's like "bringing a gun to a knife fight" which is accurate considering the low budget of the film against the prowess of Robbie who also boasts of a long list of successful blockbusters. Robbie tried everything she could to "rise to the occasion" in every scene she was in even when the pacing and story seemed mediocre at one point. Travis Fimmel, "All Hail Ragnar" (could never stop calling him that) did good as George Evans (He's been busy being booked of late). Finn Cole is a star to watch out for even though his character struggled a little bit to keep up with Margot Robbie's Allison Wells
Dreamland is a meticulously written romance that has the action you've come for. Clichéd? Definitely yes but it could be totally worth your while. Speaking of the music: The score/music was almost perfect and it was a diamond amongst rubies for Patrick Higgins and his crew.
The cast includes: Finn Cole (Eugene Evans), Margot Robbie (Allison Wells), Travis Fimmel (George Evans), Garrett Hedlund (Perry Montroy), Kerry Condon (Olivia Evans), Lola Kirke (Older Phoebe Evans/Narrator).
The film had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 28, 2019.
My rating: 7.0/10

Your friendly neighborhood, Batm... oops! Sorry! Peter Parker had to take a break from set and the web-slinger has shared another BTS photo of his spidey boots on his Instagram story; Yes, he does have an Instagram of course, afterall, he's human. Ladies and gentlemen, your third live-action onscreen Spiderman, Tom Holland.
This is not the first time the 24 years old actor shared his behind the scenes photos in costume.
He had posted an earlier one in a nose-masked spidey costume.

Update on NARCOS: MEXICO... Additional cast and details

Late last month, Netflix released a 30 minute teaser for the third season of Narcos: Mexico. The streaming network previously announced that lead actor for season one and two, Diego Luna (Felix Gallardo) won't be returning for the third installment of the series. The end of the second season saw Gallardo finally arrested and tried by the DEA after frustrating intermittent setbacks.
Netflix has announced an update on the cast of Narcos: Mexico and some of the new faces include new guest stars for Season 3: Yessica Borroto as Marta, Damayanti Quintanar as Hortencia, Manuel Uriza as Carlos Hank Gonzalez, Markin Lopez as Rogelio, and Bad Bunny (Latino singer, rapper, and songwriter) whose real name is Benito Martinez Ocasio (First acting debut). Bad Bunny will play Arturo Paez, a member of Ramon Felix’s gang called the “Narco Juniors,” a group of rich, well connected kids from upper echelon of the society who fell in with the cartel life for the money, drugs and violence. Mendez, Guerra and Rubino are also one of the biggest additions to the cast this season.
Mendez will play Victor Tapia, a Juarez cop. Guerra has been cast as Ismael Zambada, an independent drug trafficker (of course, lol). Rubino will play Andrea Nunez, a young ambitious journalist (oh, lest I forget, she's female).
For fans of Narcos and its spin-off, Narcos: Mexico, it's no news that the series focuses on the illegal drug trade in Mexico, whereas the parent series (Narcos) centered on the illegal drug trade in Colombia (that's the one on Pablo Escobar; you're welcome). If you have not started any of the aforementioned series before, the best time is now but if you hate action, some drug cartel violence or gore, I'm duly sorry, it's not for you. Icing on the cake: It's loosely based on real events.

Netflix announces new 2D toon musical

On Thursday 12, 2020, Netflix announced that it's new original musical family series, Arlo The Alligator Boy is in the works. It is about a half-human, half-alligator boy, who decides to leave his sheltered life in the swamp to search for his long lost father. The animated movie musical will premiere in 2021, followed by a series for kids and families worldwide! As ridiculous as the premise sounds, (I mean, very absurd) it could be a pandora box.
The voice cast for both movie and series includes Michael J. Woodard, Mary Lambert, Michael (Flea) Balzary, Annie Potts, Tony Hale, Brett Gelman, Jonathan Van Ness, Haley Tju, Jennifer Coolidge and Vincent Rodriguez III. Ryan Crego, also known for Puss In Boots (2011) will serve as the executive producer and director of the movie and the executive producer and showrunner of the series.

Greenland Movie (spoiler-free review)

Gerard Butler's Greenland, released over the past months in a few dozen foreign territories, where the moderately budgeted production has so far grossed just under $28 million. The Ric Roman Waugh directed movie's domestic theatrical plans were recently scrapped by STX-film making it available for download by mid-December. Such a move will likely deal another blow to U.S.  cinemas. Streaming sites have made the download of the movie possible for some regions and one could begin to wonder what-the-heck was going on (Good for business? Don't think so).
The movie, beautifully shot and written could have boasted of a grossing profit befitting a successful blockbuster but for the pandemic which has been blamed for its apocalyptic box-office.
If you are looking for the perfect movie to watch amidst the coronavirus pandemic, this is perfect for you. Had my doubts before watching, thinking it could be so much worse but I was disappointed. The movie is realistic; the action and destruction is a beauty to behold even though there were instances of bad CGI in a few scenes.
The movie is about how a family struggles for survival in the face of a catastrophic natural disaster. Gerard Butler has had his fair share of criticism in movies but this particular one complements his acting best.
Greenland's cast includes: Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, David Denman, Hope Davis, Roger Dale Floyd, Andrew Bachelor and Scott Glenn.
My rating: 7/10
Rated PG-13, 119 minutes.

James Gunn' The Suicide Squad pre-production details.

Twitter erupted on Monday when The Suicide Squad director: James Gunn decided to interact with the blockbuster' fans in an interesting and informative session on the popular app. Most of the questions centered on his current quarantine, the upcoming star-studded film, writing and direction, crew, and so on. An handler asked Gunn if he ever feels overwhelmed with the task of managing and directing each and every cast, especially with the inclusion of some new faces like John Cena's Peacemaker in new HBO spin-off series.

He replied by saying that there are enough directors on the show but knowing he is in quarantine, he could "even write the whole thing" by himself. Another user, @MarkHaldor asked why Gunn kept majority of the  cast from the previous Suicide Squad movie and he replied by acknowledging David Ayer (previous director) for the good casting job he has done and even though there was a possibility of him not using the old cast; he has now.

One of the other questions thrown at him includes the question of if he has started producing Guardians Of The Galaxy yet or if there's any kind of planning in the works and Gunn replied by saying that the script has been written and most of the production heads have been hired so, filming could start sooner than expected. The question of Dave Bautista coming back was also put across to Gunn who sarcastically and rhetorically answered, "Would I do a Guardians movie without Dave Bautista?" Dave Bautista plays Drax the Destroyer in Marvel Cinematic Universe's Guardians of the Galaxy. He has appeared in his character in first two films of the franchise and was last seen as Drax in MCU's Avengers: Infinity War.

The interactive session concluded with another famous director, James Mangold (Logan) stressing that a director's script is never done and if a script isn't compelling enough, then that is the hardest part because the work has hardly started; a statement which James Gunn "100% agree" on.

The DC Extended Universe sequel, which is officially titled The Suicide Squad, is currently scheduled for release on 6th August, 2021.

Johnny Depp may be back for another pirate adventure

Who doesn't love the savy, swagger-walking, witty and iconic Captain Jack Sparrow? No one I suppose. Back in October, Disney announced they would be creating a new Pirates Of The Caribbean chapter with the help of Chernobyl screenwriter Craig Mazin and Pirates' alumni Ted Elliot and guess what? (..drum rolls..) Johnny Depp may be reprising his role as the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow for Disney's sixth installment of the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise.

The celebrated actor has been in and out (mostly in) the news lately regarding his case with his ex-wife, 'Amber Heard' over allegations of maltreatment and domestic violence which has robbed the 56-year-old actor of his 'paramount' (no pun intended) roles in major blockbusters such as The Pirates of the Caribbean and recently (during his libel case against British tabloid: The Sun) 'Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them' as major studio 'Warner Bros' distanced themselves on matters of DEPP vs HEARD  when first made public. After many months of slander against the actor, documents were eventually revealed showing he might be innocent afterall as the public made a U-turn in support and favor of the Kentucky born actor.

Disney has interests of making the upcoming movie to be female led and whether this information changes or not, we'd know in time; which means Depp's character (Captain Jack Sparrow) could play 'more of a supporting role' in the highly anticipated movie.

TALENTS OR TALENTS?

What is talent? Talent is a marked natural ability an individual has or as I will like to call it: gift. Talent also  was a unit of weight that was introduced in Mesopotamia at the end of the 4th millennium BC, and was normalized at the end of the 3rd millennium during the Akkadian-Sumer phase and it is mostly used to as a unit for weighing gold or shekels. This begs the question: Is your talent an avenue for revenue or are you still looking for reassurance from someone before you set out to weigh your gifts in gold? That’s a drab and boring process and you may never find your validation that way. I was once like that; let me take you back to my memory lane.

Few years ago, a gentleman asked what sorts of things I had passion for and I started stating things that I really thought that I fancied; he needn’t know if I was lying or not (after all), all he had to do was listen (and he did). Deep down, I knew I wasn’t coherent in the ‘stupendous’ speech I gave that day and I felt it could come back to haunt me; and it did.

I had always been a shy person and everyone who grew up around me knows how I was. It was always the case of a shy, wimpy kid (no diary) who grew up with separated parents and who had to grow up with his aunt. Wasn’t too involved in many activities besides chores. In fact, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life when I grew up. For me, it was a case of rocking the boat to the lute of the bard till the strings snap. One thing that I knew for sure whilst transcending into puberty was that I started having a flair for movies, music, and dancing. Took part in a few stage plays then and it was frightening but hey! Rome wasn’t built in a day. I had a lot of Icons back then; Icons people idolized like the likes of Michael Jackson, James Brown, Bruce Lee, Usher, and so on. The funny thing was no one knew I was into those things because I never felt confident enough to ‘show-off’ around the house.

Time went on and I tried to catch up too and was ticking the right tocks to develop my ‘patent’ talents and guess what, I now have a clear idea of who I wanted to become, where I want to be and how I want to pioneer my path in life. Got a few gigs in acting, peaked my interest in criticism on film and music, I could sing myself and got some awards ‘here and there’, but some external factors tried to bring me down and I felt I wasn’t doing enough to bring out the best version of myself so I tried something new. What if I was too engrossed in sulking to myself to realize how much talented I am? What if I monetize my talents to bring myself the comfortable life I desire? All these streamed through the banks of my mind and I realize I could bring myself to create, entertain and love what I do without selling off my self to the so called external factors I so despise like ‘people saying I’m not good enough ‘, ‘He can’t’.

So, dear reader, which version of yourself do you want to be? The one that hoards his/her talents for reservation whilst waiting for validation from people or the version that sees a way in weighing his/her talents in monetary unit? The most paramount thing is to take a step today towards your gold and quintessentially remember that planning and strategies goes a long way too in realizing yourself.
